Postby Rachmk19 » Sun Sep 14, 2008 10:01 pm

Hi I was wondering if someone could help?? I\\\'m 20 nearly 21 and I left school 2 months before my leaving as i was pregnant now my son is older i wish to get out and do something with my life. I love anything got to do with beauty eg hair nails make-up but everything is so expensive I\\\'m a single mother who can\\\'t afford these courses for 5 thosand. Anyway I thought my best bet would be an a apprenticeship in hairdressing but im having such trouble finding one I live in athy and no where seems to have anything i know Fas do courses but I\\\'ve read there in Athlone!! Can you please let me know if there are any other options??? Thanks

Hi Rachmk19. I had a look to see if I could find anything in the Post-Leaving Cert courses in Co.Kildare and St.Patrick's Community College in Naas has one in Hair and Beauty. It may be full by now but you could check with them at (045) 897885. There are no tuition fees for PLC courses only an application fee, exam fees, a charge for materials if necessary but you would probably qualify for various allowances etc as a Lone Parent. You may qualify under the VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunity Scheme) which is run through the VECs. If you contact Mary Campbell Ann Kilpatrick, VTOS Centre, Old Model School, Kildare Rd, Athy, 0509-8632044, she should be able to help you. It may include travelling expenses to the college but I am not sure so be sure to ask all the questions. Write them down before you phone or call in to see her. Have a look at www.vtos.ie/main/index.php also for more information. I checked with FAS about their Beautician course which is due to start on 25/09/08 and it was located in "North Kildare" whatever that means.... but anyway, they are not taking any more applications for that. If you cannot get on the course in Naas, if that would be within reach of you, then why not check out some other PLCs with your local VEC College of Further Education? Also have a look at www.onefamily.ie/home.htm. Hope that helps. Miriam
