Bright future for engineering jobs, claims representative body
Engineers Ireland has today said students must appreciate the emerging engineering job opportunities in the Irish economy.
Responding to newspaper reports citing the high level of university students that are dropping out of science and technology courses in university, Engineers Ireland director general John Power said: "We clearly need to focus on the teaching of maths and science, incentivise these teachers and do whatever it takes to improve the standard of teaching in these subjects in second-level, but students should appreciate the growing opportunities.
"While many sectors are heavily hit by the downturn, there are still jobs in sectors of engineering and science.
"The Government needs to promote its knowledge society strategy and its report last month, 'Technology Actions to Support the Smart Economy', predicts tens of thousands of jobs in the tech sector.
"So it's not all doom and gloom if you look to the future."
